MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Crusader women's soccer team wrapped up the 2012 season with a 3-2 win over conference No. 4-ranked Western Oregon University today in Monmouth,Oregon.
“Absolutely great effort from our girls, especially with a crazy weekend of travel and coming off our double OT tie at SMU less than 18 hours before today's game!” commented head coach Jamie Lindvall. “Great goals form Sarah (Staropoli) and Juju (
Julianne Steele) to put us ahead and then an outstanding header from Celina (Mortensen) off of a set piece that ended up being the game winner.”
The Wolves were able to get on the board first as Kimberly Witmer was successful on a header to get WOU up 1-0 just 12 minutes into the half.
In the 24
th minute Senior
Sarah Staropoli scored her fifth goal of the season to even the game at 1-1.
Both teams would go scoreless up to the 77
th minute mark, where
Julianne Steele would net her first goal of the season to get the Crusaders up 2-1 with 13 minutes left in the match. Staropoli would be credited with the assist.
Just under two-minutes later Staropoli would find
Celina Mortensen on the attack. Mortensen headed the ball home giving her two goals on the season and putting the Crusaders up 3-1.
In the 81
st minute Makana Pundyke converted on a header of her own to get the Wolves within one.
NNU would hold defensively and earn the win 3-2 in Monmouth, Oregon.
Tanya Zickefoose had 2 saves in her final match as a Crusader. Zickefoose finished 8-7-1 overall.

The Crusaders finish the 2012 season 8-9-1 overall and 5-8-1 in GNAC play.
