Crusaders focus on finishing in 6-2 rout of Great Falls

This time, the Crusaders didn't let their chances slip away.

After being blanked in their season-opener Thursday, the Northwest Nazarene women's soccer team took a day to focus on finishing and it paid off with an offensive onslaught in a 6-2 rout of Great Falls on Saturday.

“Today we made sure to finish our shots,” said NNU's Autumn Yturbe, who scored a pair of goals and added an assist. “Last game (Thursday) we had some opportunities, we just, we didn't capitalize on them. This time, when the opportunities were there we made sure to capitalize on them. That's what we practiced (Friday).”

Sarah Staropoli opened the onslaught in the 15th minute before Yturbe set up a Celina Mortensen goal in the 28th minute for NNU (1-1).

Lacey Thompson then scored in the 33rd minute for a commanding 3-0 start to the day.

“I think sometimes it's just being more mentally disciplined actually,” said NNU coach Jamie Lindvall of the difference offensively from Thursday to Saturday.

“And more belief. I think that belief in sports is worth a lot as far as actually believing in the ball and making it all the way through (a run) and having people there for you.”

That belief continued to show in the second half as Yturbe scored in the 53rd minute before a Julianne Steele goal in the 60th minute put the Crusaders up 5-0.

“The fact it's multiple people scoring from way different places on the field, it's so many great things, individual efforts,” Lindvall said. “… Just good team soccer where we're not watching someone play, we're actually working and playing together. It's definitely what we want to do.”

Yturbe's second goal epitomized the NNU team effort as Crusader keeper Tanya Zickefoose sent a kick towards midfield that Monik Martinez headed forward.

Yturbe ran down the ball and booted it home for a 6-1 edge.

“I just ran as fast as I could I guess to get there, and I actually got there,” Yturbe said, “and it felt good to put it back there. I just didn't want to miss it.”

Ashly Pezel and Kandace Leliefeld each scored in the second half for the Argos (0-2).
