LAGRANDE, Ore. - Jaclyn Puga and Barak Watson each posted individual victories as the Northwest Nazarene University cross country teams defeated Eastern Oregon University in a dual meet on Saturday morning in LaGrande.
The Crusader women's team defeated the Mountaineers 23-32 as Puga finished the 3,000-meter course in a time of 10:55, while the men's team won 24-33 as Watson and Matt Stark finished 1-2 over the 5,000-meter distance with times of 15:40 and 15:41.
"While the course was relatively flat, the runners had to battle 25-30 mph winds the entire time," commented NNU assistant coach Jake Perry.
Following Puga in the top-10 on the women's side were Jordan Powell (4th, 11:23), Michelle Phillips (5th, 11:32), Christine Harwood (9th, 11:53), and Ashley Rendahl (10th, 12:07).
Top-10 men finishers included Watson, Stark, Kyle Gray (5th, 16:04), and Benard Ngeno (9th, 16:17).
Rounding out the NNU contingent of ladies were Meagan Swenson (14th, 12:31), Ashley Morman (15th, 13:00), Sam Hill (16th, 13:01), Chelsea Layne (17th, 13:04), and Danielle Beesley (22nd, 13:32).
Complete NNU men's results included Seth Clark (11th, 16:21), Jesse Baggenstos (12th, 16:22), Luke Hetrick (13th, 16:26), Neil Easter (14th, 16:27), Matt Rankin (18th, 16:40), Justin Webb (20th, 16:54), Alex Crystal (22nd, 16:57), Josh Merioles (26th, 17:09), Joe Lovell (27th, 17:11), and Hank Hetrick (30th, 17:40).
"It was nice to see eight of our men finished in the top-15 and I thought Swenson, Morman, Hill, and Layne ran well as a pack for the ladies, all finishing strong," Perry added.
The Crusader harriers will now prepare for the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships, contested next Saturday at the Apple Ridge Run Cross Country Facility in Yakima, Wash.
