ELLENSBURG, Wash. - Members of the Northwest Nazarene University track & field teams claimed nine conference championships and Ashley Puga was named the Outstanding Female Performer of the meet on Saturday as the Crusaders competed at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference track & field championships at Ellensburg's Tomlinson Stadium.

“Both teams really competed well this weekend,” commented NNU head coach John Spatz.  “The women's team finished fourth, but were only 24 points out of first, so that tells you how close the team scoring finished.  We had some tremendous performances and we couldn't be happier with the results from this weekend.”

Puga highlighted the stellar women's performances, earning the Outstanding Female Performer honor by winning the 800-meter (2:13.10) title, anchoring the winning 4x400 relay team and finishing second in both the 1500m (4:35.10) and 3000m (10:02.12) races.  Ashley set new individual school records in both the 800m and 3000m and was part of the quartet that broke the 4x400 relay record by more than eight seconds.  Puga set or improved on national provisional qualifying times in each of the four races.

Greg Hamm led the Crusader men as he captured his third GNAC triple jump crown with a leap of 46-10.75 and now has six GNAC triple jump titles, three outdoor and three indoor.  Also grabbing gold for the NNU men were freshman Josh Heidegger in the Javelin (199-01) and senior Kevin Lambert in the 10,000m (31:31.32), also setting a new NNU school mark.

The Crusader women's team swept the sprint races as Nicki Schutte won the 100m (12.82), Latoya Tidwell won the 200m (26.00) and Lindsay Brady won the 400m (57.76).  Tidwell and Brady each broke NNU records in the process and teamed with Schutte and Kim Berberick to set a new NNU mark in the 4x100 relay with 48.49.

The women's 4x400 relay team followed suit and crushed the school record with a time of 3:51.47, good enough for the GNAC title, the school record and a national provisional mark for the team of Brady, Schutte, Puga and Elisa Decker.

In the process of winning nine events, the Crusaders upgraded the NNU record book with seven of the nine wins setting new NNU school records.

The women's team finished with 138 points (4th) and the men's team was fifth overall with 73 total points.

The Crusaders will complete the spring season next weekend at the Western Oregon Twilight meet and then look forward to national meet selections.
